Pull the knife towards you while moving the blade in the direction that needs cutting. When skiving leather, hold the knife where the edge of the blade is facing in the same way as the edge for the leather or at an angle as preferred, then cut your leather outwards or across from where you would like the skive to begin straight through to the edge of the leather.
