Description
Saflax - Bonsai - Three Toothed Maple - Acer buergerianum - 30 seeds - Small and neatly shaped leaves / Outdoor Bonsai. With germ-free and air-permeable coconut fiber substrate for successful cultivation. Worth knowing: The deciduous Three Toothed Maple is a real curiosity from East China that develops rather small leaves with three tips. While sprouting, the leaves take on an initially bright orange colour, which turns into green during the year, and in autumn the tree displays a whole colour spectrum from orange-red to fiery-red coloured leaves.. Natural Place: The natural habitat of the Three Toothed Maple stretches from China to Taiwan and further until Japan, where it grows from coastal areas until up to 1500 meters above sea level. Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase the germinability, you should initially keep the seeds in the refrigerator for about a week for stratification - then place them for another 24 hours in a bowl with lukewarm water for priming. After that, plant the seeds about 0,5 cm deep into moist potting compost or proper bonsai earth. Cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out, but don’t forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20°C and 25° Celsius and keep the earth moist, but not wet. Since the seeds germinate rather slow and intermittently, it usually takes about eight to twelve weeks until the first seedlings come up. Place: Other than the European Maple, the Acer buergerianum likes to be kept in a half-shaded and wind-protected place - at least it should be sheltered from the strong midday sun. Care: The tree needs to be watered plentiful, but without waterlogging. From the start of the leaf formation until the beginning of the autumn coloration, you may provide your bonsai with fluid fertilizer for bonsai plants every two weeks. To develop a firm stem, strong branches and a neat ramification in young trees, you should always let the new shoots grow eight to ten leaf pairs, before pruning back to only one or two pairs. Every bonsai type except the broom shape are possible for cultivation. The Three Toothed Maple develops a strong rooting and should be repotted preferably every year, at least every two years - shift the plant in early spring after a brief root cutting to a new pot. During Winter: The Three Toothed Maple is only limited frost-hard and, especially young plants until four years of age, should be properly protected in areas with winter temperatures below - 10° Celsius. Keep watering the plant, but only modestly and only on frost-free days.
