Hemstitch needles, generically known as Wing needles, are traditionally used for heirloom sewing on light or medium weight loosely woven fabrics. Consider this needle for multimedia quilts too. Sometimes called a Wing needle. It is used to create decorative openwork or cut-work on tightly woven fabrics. This needle comes in sizes 100 and 120 and should be used with caution as it is very sharp and is made to actually cut the fabric. The user may want to use a stabilizer and experiment with decorative stitches when using this needle. Carefully hand turn the needle through the stitch movements before actually trying it on the project to assure that the throat plate opening will accommodate the design Using a straight stitch plate will probably result in a broken needle. Hemstitching, also known as heirloom stitching, is a decorative embellishment used at the hem of clothes, bed linens, pillows, and other household textiles. Schmetz's Hemstitch needles feature a winged tip. The wings of the needle push fabric fibre apart; creating small holes. Matching thread is then sewn around the holes; creating eyelets, lacework, and embroidery. For best results, use lightweight cotton or linen with a water-soluble stabilizer on the back; to prevent puckering. The use of silk or embroidery thread is highly recommended. Use Schmetz's Hemstitch needles with a clear, open toe embroidery foot. The special groove in the base of the foot allows the hem stitches to pass beneath the presser foot without getting stuck. Hemstitch needles are intended for use with heirloom stitches; typically built into your sewing machine. Give simple blouses a special effect along the buttonhole placket. Stitch particularly accented seams with 40 Wt. viscose (rayon) or multi-colour threads. Create embroidery motifs on your embroidery machine. Conjure up decorative effects when attaching lace. Prevent seam puckering on soft/light fabrics by using spray starch or a non-permanent stabilizer such as tear-off embroidery backing or water-soluble or heat-sensitive embroidery film. Hemstitch Needles, also called Wing Needles, can be used for decorative seams and hemstitches in loosely woven fabrics. The traditional hemstitch effect is created by the "wings" on both sides of the needle blade which push the fabric threads to the side. The fabric threads support this effect by preventing the woven fabric from taking on its original position. The best results and the most visible holes are achieved by using a decorative stitch where the needle is inserted multiple times into the same stitch hole. These stitches are sometimes already marked in bold as hemstitch stitches in the machine instructions. Traditional hemstitch embroidery in fine batiste or eyelet embroidery on linen are classic examples of this needle type. Please make sure to use a zigzag stitch plate with an elongated stitch hole. It is best to apply the first stitches manually by turning the hand wheel in order to verify whether the needle is touching the needle plate. You should also test different decorative stitches on fabric scraps in order to determine the optimal thread tension as well as stitch length and width.
